Summary: BioDiversity Research Institute (BRI) is a scientific and educational nonprofit dedicated to environmental research and education that supports the protection of biodiversity and ecological health. BRI is seeking field biologists to assist in studies associated with the Gulf of Mexico – Mississippi Canyon 252 Oil Spill. Field Crew Leaders will report to Project Coordinators. Biologists will be working from Florida to Texas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Field Crew Leaders are responsible for achieving on-site research and study goals, including:
Hours/Schedule: This is a full-time, seasonal position, with varying hire and release dates, depending on the individual assignment. Weather and other factors determine the work schedule. It is at the discretion of the employee to work effectively as conditions dictate.
Qualifications: Successful candidates will have a M.S. or B.S in biology, zoology, ecology, or a related discipline, and will have knowledge of and experience with avian biology. This is a challenging position and will require a highly motivated enthusiastic individual who is committed to conservation and applied research. Applicants must also have excellent organizational skills, including the ability to collect and maintain accurate hard-copy and digital data records. Preferred experience includes: behavioral observations, color band identification, endangered species monitoring, telemetry and banding experience. A valid driver's license is required and experience operating full-sized 4-wheel drive trucks is preferred. Travel between the study sites, the command center in Mobile, AL and BRI Headquarters in Gorham, ME is required. Applicants should be in excellent physical condition and be comfortable in weather extremes including rain, humidity, high temperatures, as well as tolerating biting insects.
Compensation: $550-$800/week commensurate on experience and education. Housing is provided.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director and the Director’s Science Assistant to coordinate routine communications and coordinate essential duties and responsibilities as stated below.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to (1) communicate clearly and effectively to the public and staff on the behalf of the Executive Director, (2) exhibit superior organizational skills, (3) display resourcefulness and independence, and (4) have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Limited travel abilities needed.
Compensation: This is a full-time position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.

BioDiversity Research Institute seeks a student intern to assist our outreach program. The objective of this internship is to provide interns with the opportunity to observe (and sometimes assist) several of BRI’s field research projects and with the help of a supervisor translate these experiences into journal entries for BRI’s website and blog. There is also an opportunity to assist monitoring BRI wildlife webcams and help review still images of nesting activity on these cams. The right candidate will (1) be motivated to research topics in wildlife and environmental science, (2) be flexible and willing to endure rugged days in the field amid biting insects, (3) exhibit written and verbal communication skills and the desire to improve, and (4) be available for about 20 hours per week for 6-8 weeks during the summer of 2010.
