After completing her undergraduate degree from Trinity College, CT , Julie worked as a field technician for the USFWS in Russia where she monitored migratory seabirds on a small island in the Sea of Okhotsk. From there she moved on to become the Russian Far East Program Coordinator for Pacific Environment (PE), an environmental non-profit based in San Francisco, CA. During her time at PE, Julie organized exchanges, workshops and seminars across Russia and the Pacific Northwest for scientists, citizen groups and government regulators. Her interest in contaminant transport led her to Duke University where, in 2003, she completed a master’s degree in environmental management with a concentration in environmental toxicology, chemistry and risk assessment.
While in Maine, in addition to raising a young family, she has worked as a research assistant for Cape Technologies, an environmental technology company, and as Assistant to the President at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. Julie joined BRI in 2008 and is thrilled to be working where she can follow all of her interests and passions. At BRI, she writes and releases the newsletter, develops communication materials, and assists in bringing BRI science to policy makers.
Julie is interested in the role of science in environmental decision-making and policy development. She also holds a special interest in the Arctic and hopes to build connections between BRI and Russian researchers.
