The NERC facilitates regional-scale research, monitoring and assessment activities by: (1) initiating joint research projects, (2) sharing data and results, (3) participating in analysis and synthesis of regional environmental issues, and (4) increasing the level of communication among researchers, resource managers, and policy-makers interested in the results of regional environmental research

The purpose of this cooperative is to promote:

1) A shared regional perspective among the cooperators

2) Exchange of information and ideas through workshops and shared databases.

3) Development of integrated regional research projects.

4) Synthesis of existing data by cross-site comparison and regional models.

5) Support for long-term monitoring in the region.

6) Interaction among research scientists, resource managers and policy makers.
