Joan first came to New England in the summer of 1999 when she volunteered her computer skills at The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) in New Hampshire in exchange for time out on the lakes helping to survey and band the Common Loon. Joan has always been fascinated with this beautiful bird. She spent the summer gaining all of the experience she would need to fill the role as the Squam Lake “Loon Ranger” during the summer of 2000.
In 2001, Joan was hired by LPC through the AmeriCorps program to create a biological database that would house 25 years of research data. Through the AmeriCorps program she was able to learn MS Access, and as a result was able to provide LPC with a working database. She is currently in the process of creating a database for BRI’s research data.
