Dustin grew up exploring the lakes and forests of southern New Hampshire before making Maine his home. While studying wildlife at Unity College, he began working as a field biologist for the Loon Preservation Committee, surveying lakes throughout New Hampshire and Maine.
Dustin joined BRI full time in 2007, surveying loons in the Rangeley Lakes region. Since that time, he has worked on projects for every department within the organization and developed skills and techniques for capturing and sampling several species of aquatic and terrestrial fauna.
Dustin’s annual research priorities split between the waterfowl and mammal programs. During the winter months his work focuses around using satellite telemetry to study migratory movements and breeding ground delineation in various sea duck species along the eastern seaboard. Much of this work also involves using non-lethal sampling techniques to help determine exposure levels and effects of environmental contaminants in waterfowl populations. As a Qualified Indiana Bat Surveyor (QIBS), Dustin spends the summer conducting mist-net and acoustic surveys for the endangered Indiana bat and other species.
In addition to his work with BRI, Dustin is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rhode Island where he is studying the spatial ecology and habitat use of white-winged scoters wintering in southern New England.
